Well, the forecasters got it right, it certainly was 'fresh to frightening'. The first race was thrown out after the windward mark was declared to be 'on the move'. Like usual, that suited some but not others. It certainly suited team 'B Mobile' who broke their boom on the way to the start line, they were able to quickly 'borrow' the boom from another IC24 and missed the first race. There was a long delay after the first race whilst the committee boat tried to get its anchor to bite. 'B Mobile' managed to get the replacement boom rigged and got back out onto the race course without missing the start...never say die!
At the end of the day, with 5 of the 6 races counting, Fraito Lugo's 'Orion' enjoys a 4 point cushion over 'MIO Broadband'. Then we have 'B Mobile', 'INTAC' 'Brand New Secondhand'...already the favourites are up at the front.
There should be less wind for Day 2 but it's still unlikely that spinnakers will fly. The 'on the water' umpires will be back out there, Chris Carerri was on the receiving end of some stern discipline being made to circle 3 times for one incident. If you don't take your first penalty quickly enough or if the umpires judge that one one turn is not enough they keep pointing the flag and whisting you until they are satisfied!
