The Holmbergs are on top after 12 races...
After waiting for the wind to stabilize race officer Chris Haycraft got the 2007 Nanny Cay Nations Cup underway just after 9.00am this morning. The wind stayed light but consistent all day, never quite reaching the forecasted 12-14 knots. The Holmbergs' 'Bitter End Yacht Club' team consisted of Peter, Denise, John, Diane and Kai...most definitely a real family affair.
The day was split into 6 flights of 2 races with each team sailing a total of six races. This format allows teams to get out of the sun and relax when they are not racing. The scene ashore is what really defines the NCNC, competitors are able to catch up with news from the islands while watching the action afloat.
Team b.mobile from the BVI made a dream start. Alec Anderson at the helm with Colin Rathbun and Robbie Hirst assisting won the first race. At the start of race 2 they were seen spinning through a penalty turn at the start which they never really recovered from, eventually ending up 5th. Team HIHO logged two seconds to come out on top at the end of the flight.
Flight two sees the Hombergs open their account with two bullets. Team Blighty's (Andrew Waters) rack up a pair of seconds, the Canadians a pair of thirds. Flight three sees the BVI boys with a first and a second...but the Holmbergs are back out after that with another pair of bullets.
The Holmbergs kind of slip up in flight 5 with a brace of seconds and the BVI respond in flight six with a pair of bullets...nip and tuck at the top!
There's a little more wind forecasted tomorrow and another 4 flights to complete. There's even the possibility of racing all 11 teams at once in a fleet race once the matrix is done, we will have to see. Here are the tallies for all teams.
